At Cocoon, we conduct member interviews every week to learn more about how the app is weaving into people's lives, and uncover opportunities to serve them better. This series shares some of our favorite stories.
We recently caught up with Kyle Mitchell, a product designer from Ontario, Canada. Kyle told us about his search for a private messaging app, and how Cocoon has kept his kids connected with their grandfather during the pandemic.
Kyle's father hasn't seen his grandkids in person for over a year. His age makes him particularly vulnerable to COVID19, and Kyle doesn't want to risk getting him sick. In the meantime, like so many of us, they're doing their best to stay connected virtually.
For Kyle's family, that happens in Cocoon, where they share photos and message back and forth. There, Kyle posts frequent pictures of what his kids are up to, making sure his father doesn't miss too much.
"This at least lets me share as many moments as I can with him."
The pandemic wasn't what first brought Kyle to Cocoon though. He found us right after we launched while looking for a private messaging app for his family. iMessage wasn't working, since many of them are Android users, and Facebook Messenger was a non-starter due to privacy concerns.
When Kyle told some of his dad friends about Cocoon, they were interested in using it with their own families. Together, they formed a dad coalition to test it out. They had a few important criteria in mind: it had to be private, secure, cross-platform, and intuitive enough for older relatives (like grandfathers) to use. Happily, we passed the test! Kyle created a Cocoon for his family and had them set up in no time.
"My father isn't a Luddite, but he's not super tech savvy. That's one of the things I really like about Cocoon— it's really simple, simple enough for him to use."
Kyle told us that one of his favourite things about Cocoon is that images and videos don't get compressed like they do over text. This way, his father can see the grandkids in full clarity!
With the vaccine rollout well underway in Canada, we hope they get to see each other IRL very soon.
